Today while I was at TGI Friday's before my class, killing time, I asked the waitress if she could put on the Olympics and she obliged, putting on Telemundo. I figured there wouldn't be a problem with that, as they are owned by NBC, so they probably show the same sort of coverage, with the big events tape-delayed for primetime. But apparently, they don't. So I sat there and watched Paul Hamm stick an amazing routine on the high bar and score a 9.837, after which, you saw him on the sidelines, in disbelief almost while a Korean hung his head. I figured he had probably won a medal and knocked out the Korean, but then, after Telemundo came back from break, I saw him on the pedestal with gold around his neck as the two Koreans took silver and bronze. So knowing he won gold, I sat down tonight to watch the Olympics and never would have imagined the path he had to take to win it.
Coming back from his fall on the vault to win a medal was improbable (it was almost comical to listen to the announcers talk about how he would have to be perfect on the last two rotations to win a bronze, already knowing he had won gold). Coming back to win a gold was almost impossible, even the announcers were left speechless, with one even commenting that what he just saw was the single greatest thing he'd seen on the gymnastics floor. Suffice to say, I'm quite happy I watched the whole primetime show tonight, as I would have just figured Paul won gold with a great all-around, but seeing him come back from the vault, giving almost perfect performances on the high bar and the parallel bars was astounding. Congrats!
