She's starting to make strides towards completion. "She" being my server behemoth...I successfully transfered my computer from my old Antec P180 (I loved that case) to the new Compucase Rack Mount Chassis. The transfer went surprisingly well. I only ran into one glitch and that was when I couldn't put the hard drive exactly where I wanted to using the spare parts I had available. Then, when I went looking for some screws, I found the 3.5" to 5.25" adapters Compucase provided to me. Worked like a charm - just had to switch around the floppy drive (the floppy drive which I ordered off of Newegg yesterday at 4pm and which was waiting for me at home today at 4:30pm. I <3 Newegg.
So, I now have two brand spanking new DVD±RW drives in the Compucase. One has Lightscribe, so now, if I so choose, I can make direct DVD->DVD copies (of my own content of course...) and I can use the Lightscribe to label the discs directly. I also installed a new SATA drive alongside the Raptor I was using previously. I picked it up at Fry's last week when they had 100gigs for $50 (I only needed 74 gigs to back up the Raptor weekly). However, when I got to Fry's, the 100giggers were freely upgraded by Maxtor to 120gigs. So I got 120gigs for $50. Not the best price per gigabyte, but I didn't need any more space, so I was more than happy to get those 20 gigs free.
Everything else was transfered from one case to the other without problems. The 3U case now sits atop my desk making a fair amount of noise (to be expected from a 3U chassis which can only use 40mm fans). As a result, I removed both fan speed adjusters from the CPU and the video card, so they are both running full throttle as well. The CPU is running at a cool 37° with the hard drives running at 30° (Raptor) and 34° (Maxtor). Works for me. Might get a few degrees hotter in the closet where the rack is, but not by much, and even another 5-10° would be acceptable.
So, everything seems to be working flawlessly. I'll try playing some World of Warcraft tonight on it to see how it holds up with a bit of CPU and VPU stress. But as it stands now, it's sublime. And the case, with the two black DVD-RWs, and black floppy drive looks amazing. I'm very happy with the purchase - the power supply is working perfectly, had all the connections I needed, and tons of screws - not that I needed them...but they'll look good with the other couple hundred I've collected.
Only problem now, my room is a mess. However, the guts of my new computer arrive Monday. That should be fun. Just can't figure out which case to use - the solid Antec P180 or the humongous Coolermaster Stacker which I was going to use for a server...it'd be a shame for it to just continue to sit around doing nothing.
