Upon returning to base, I informed my commanding officer, Lt. Cmdr. Grant Hibbard, of the events, informing him of the details of the operation and that we had received no enemy fire. I did not file an "after action" report, as one was only required when there was hostile fire. Soon thereafter, Lt. (jg) Kerry requested that he be put in for a Purple Heart as a result of a small piece of shrapnel removed from his arm that he attributed to the just-completed mission. I advised Lt. Cmdr. Hibbard that I could not support the request because there was no hostile fire. The shrapnel must have been a fragment from the M-79 that struck Lt. (jg) Kerry, because he had fired the M-79 too close to our boat. Lt. Cmdr. Hibbard denied Lt. (jg) Kerry's request. Lt. (jg) Kerry detached our division a few days later to be reassigned to another division. I departed Vietnam approximately three weeks later, and Lt. Cmdr. Hibbard followed shortly thereafter. It was not until years later that I was surprised to learn that Lt. (jg) Kerry had been awarded a Purple Heart for this night.Byron York on John Kerry & William Schachte on National Review Online

More right-wing smear campaigns - right?
Where did they come up with this one? A massive bike ride as a protest?
"A protest? What are they protesting - cabs?" asked one puzzled man as he watched the traffic-snarling procession. And then they figure that the police are just going to let them snarl downtown traffic for hours while they ride about the city, blocking intersections, causing nightmarish traffic?
"We were standing there, and the police in riot gear came," said Becca Jensen, 22, of the East Village. "It was like it was planned. It was like they set us up."URL: New York Daily News - Politics - 'Whose streets? Our streets'
Good thing the vast majority of Greeks aren't as stupid as the communists there.

Members of the Greek Communist Party stand on the ancient Acropolis Hill over a single banner, which reads in Greek "Don't forget in Najaf they're slaughtering innocents, in Palestine they're building a wall", in Athens Saturady Aug. 28, 2004. The Communist Party is planning a demonstration in Athens against this weekends visit of U.S. Secretary of State Colin PowellI mean, we only gave Iraqis their freedom (and I highly doubt anyone in Najaf was "slaughtered" - nor were they "innocent" by breaking the Geneva conventions by firing at us from inside a temple (not just any temple either, the one most sacred to most Muslims which we would have gotten torn apart for even slightly damaging). And perhaps we should have Israel take down the wall and just let suicide bombers stream freely into their country. Makes sense to me...damn those commies - they're always so logical.

I never really had a problem with Kerry's three purple hearts, no matter how they were earned, or if they were deserved. He served his country for four months and I am thankful to him and all the other veterans. However, when I learned a few days ago that you are automatically discharged after receiving three purple hearts, it all started to come together. Did Kerry petition for and receive three purple hearts just so he could get out of Vietnam earlier than he should have? He only served four months and he should have served no less than a year. Was it just a coincidence that he had his video camera ready to film "action" shots of him while he was on land in Vietnam, pretending to be valoric (yes, I know it's not a word, but it should be)? Are all his medals just part of an intricate plan to become "highly decorated" and then later run for government? I still don't know exactly what made Kerry do what he did, but I do know that instead of running on the "I was in Vietnam, so I should be President" ticket, he should have run on the issues and maybe we wouldn't be seeing the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and maybe Ret. Rear Adm. Willim L. Schachte Jr. wouldn't have gone on the record as he did yesterday:
NEW YORK -- Retired Rear Adm. William L. Schachte Jr. said Thursday in his first on-the-record interview about the swift boat veterans dispute that "I was absolutely in the skimmer" in the early morning on Dec. 2, 1968, when Lt. (j.g.) John Kerry was involved in an incident that led to his first Purple Heart.URL: Admiral speaks out, disputes Kerry's account of 1st wound
"Kerry nicked himself with a M-79 [grenade launcher]," Schachte said in a telephone interview from his home in Charleston, S.C. He said, "Kerry requested a Purple Heart."
A very good and interesting read which will most likely be brushed aside by the liberal media as "propaganda by the right."
What could that more than 100 pages contain? Questions have been raised about President Bush's drill attendance in the reserves, but Bush received his honorable discharge on schedule. Kerry, who should have been discharged from the Navy about the same time -- July 1, 1972 -- wasn't given the discharge he has on his campaign Web site until July 13, 1978. What delayed the discharge for six years? This raises serious questions about Kerry's performance while in the reserves that are far more potentially damaging than those raised against Bush.URL: Plot thickens after checking records

Whever someone asks me what I think the best pizza is, the answer, without a doubt is Pizza Port. And, on top of having the best pizza I've ever had, they also continually brew some of the best beer and hold some of the best beer festivals. Quite a while ago, I signed up for the Pizza Port Club and nothing ever really came of it. Today, waiting in the mail, was something I never really expected - my Pizza Port Club card! It'd be nice if it had my name or something on it, or if I knew for certain that they gave out Pizza Port Club numbers based on the order you signed up with their website. I'm not sure how exactly it worked out, but I'm member #2445 and this Saturday I'll be going to the Port Brewing Release Party & BBQ at Pizza Port Carlsbad. I guess I'll get details about what the club exactly enuses then, but I can't wait to have some Pizza Port pizza on Saturday along with some awesome Le Woody and Frank beer.

Thirty-five years later, we may never know what the exact truth is. We do know this group has received major support from some wealthy Republicans. All I've heard on television, on the radio, and seen on the internet is that because the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are funded by wealthy Republicans, they're in league with the Bush camp. Therefore, since MoveOn.org, and the other leftist 527s are funded by wealthy democrats (namely George Soros), they're in leage with the Kerry camp. Right?
So if Bush is calling Kerry's war record into question via the Swift Boat Vets, then vis-à-vis, Kerry is comparing Bush to Hitler via MoveOn ads.

Hell's Angels: DaVanon cycles, team scores 21
You've got to love that title sitting on the front page of ESPN.com. Last night, the Angels teed off on the Kansas City Royals' pitching staff putting up 21 runs on 22 hits. Jeff DaVanon hit for the cycle with a double in the third, a triple in the fourth, a single in the fifth and a home run in the seventh (almost got the cycle in four innings which would have been amazing). Jose Molina hit his first career grand slam as well and the Angels easily swept the season series with Kansas City, seven games to none.
The Angels have now won eight games in a row (including sweeps of the Yankees and the aforementioned Royals), though they are still one half game behind the Oakland Athletics in the AL West as Oakland has won 7 of 9 and won last night in the bottom of the ninth. With the win last night, the Angels kept pace with the Boston Red Sox and the two are still tied above the wild card standings. It should be a great final few games...

Today, I tried to blog from class, but apparently, the "Publish" button Blogger uses doesn't quite work with the stripped down version of IE in Windows Mobile, so after I got done writing the whole thing, I could'nt post it. I copied it to a text document, but it's kind of pointless now since I can replicate it here.
Basically, what's the point of all these back and forths in politics these days? Even if presented with facts, it seems as if whichever side you're own, you'll refuse to switch your views.
For example, the left believes that George Bush is in league with the Swift Boat Veterans. No matter how many times the campaign denies it, the left is not going to change their mind.
It seems pretty pointless to continue the debate since, it seems that even when presented with facts, the other side will refuse to believe them.
Heaven forbid we actually start to talk about the issues that really matter (taxes, employment, etc.).

So I'm sitting here watching former senator Max Cleland giving a news conference as he was turned away from the Texas ranch as he tried to deliver a letter to President Bush asking him to stop the Swift Boat ads. These idiots still are trying to smear Bush like he has anything to do with the Swift Boat Ads. Bush has no links to the Swift Boat Vets. According to law, he cannot tell them what to do. He cannot make them stop running the ads.
He keeps lying in front of the camera trying to advance his own agenda and trying to debase Bush and his presidency. It's complete and utter bullshit and if Cleland is going to sit here and try and advance Kerry's cause through this letter that is signed by nine veterans. He keeps accusing Bush of attacking Kerry's Vietnam service, yet just a couple days ago, Bush praised Kerry's war record, Bush has the utmost respect for Kerry's service in Vietnam. I don't see how they can directly link the Swift Boat Ads to Bush, ads which Bush has completely denounced.
"He is behind it and his campain is behind it." Cleland just stated that the Swift Boat Vets are directly tied to Bush. I'd love to see the proof there. Good thing Cleland said that it wasn't "political theater." What a joke. I'm sure Senator Kerry had nothing to do with that letter.

Globe and Mail: Mr. Bush praised Mr. Kerry's service in Vietnam as "admirable" and said Monday he wanted to see an end to third-party attack ads during the campaign, including those of an organization called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that challenge Mr. Kerry's version of events that led to his receiving five medals.URL: CNN.com - Lawmakers to Bush: Condemn Kerry attack ads - Aug 25, 2004
Stewart: "I'm sorry, were you or were you not in Cambodia?"
Kerry: No answer.
Stewart: "Are you or have you ever flip-flopped?"
Kerry: "I've flip-flopped..."
I wish I could find the complete transcript of the interview - Kerry went off on a couple of monologues on why he'll be better and why Bush is stubborn in his handling of the economy, the war, etc. He once again criticized the President for not having more countries behind the war in Iraq and said once again (without elaboration) that he'll make the troops more diverse. I guess if he wins, France and Germany will suddenly change their position on the war and send thousands of troops - right?

So while I was at the movie theater a couple days ago, I had an idea on how you can maximize ad revenue in the theaters and also build brand loyalty. If you're from Southern California, or other parts of the country, no doubt you've seen AMC's MovieWatcher club - you get 2 points for each ticket you buy to a movie and for every ten points, you get a free coke or something and at every twenty points, you get a free movie ticket to a movie that has been out for three weeks or more. At every hundred points, you get a free package of two tickets, coke & popcorn. It's a pretty good deal and between my two cards (one for Orange County and one for San Diego county) I have over 500 points (yeah...it's kinda sad when you think about it). Edwards/Regal Cinemas just recently unveiled their own program like AMC and they also feature "The 2wenty" before movies that are little ads cleverly disguised as featurettes - "Go behind NBC's latest show..." And now Century is following somewhat with a card that gets you 10% off all snack bar purchases - you also can get a coupon for a free snack bar item with a purchase every week with their e-mail newsletter.
What you need to do here is combine all three technologies. You have people register for a card and give them points for each movie ticket they purchase. You then give them points and a percentage off each snack bar item they purchase. Finally, you get them to the theater early by featuring NTN trivia before the movie starts. You can have two ten minute games before each movie where the winner would score bonus points on top of just giving away points for playing the game. The genius here is you get people there early, get them involved in the trivia game and you get them to watch ads that are shown during the results after each question, or even on the side of each question as you have a lot of space to work with.
So now we've got these people hooked into their points with great prizes available via the website or at the customer service desk as such.
For each movie ticket you buy, you get 10 points (maybe more for adult prices or fewer points for matinees). You then can give them one points per dollar spent at the snack bar AND 5% off your total purchase there. Once they get into the theater, you have a gamepad built into the armrest with a slot where you can enter your card similar to the slots available on slot machines for frequent players. They earn 2 points per game played and a bonus of 3 points for the top 10% of the players (so one person gets the bonus for every 10 players in the theater).
So let's say you've got a family of four going to the theater during prime time (full adult price tickets). So you get somewhere from 30 to 40 points for buying the tickets (maybe only 5 points per child ticket - or even better, give them one point per dollar spent as many theaters are going towards the $10 ticket). They then go to the snack bar and buy two large drinks at $4 each, 2 large popcorns at $5 each and a pretzel at $3.50. Here again they get one point per dollar - so 21.5 points and then they save 5% and end up paying $20.25 (maybe even give 2 points per dollar spent or give a 10% discount as the highest profit margins are at the snack bar). They then get into the theater ten minutes early and play the trivia game in their seats (you'd have to figure out how to use one card for multiple seats or see if you can have everyone have their own card, though that might not be practical for families). Both parents play and one scores in the top 10%, so they earn 7 more points there (2+2+3). At the end of the day, they've spent over $50, watched your ads while playing trivia and racked up 50-70 points on their card. I think if you can get a family of four to spend $50+ for one movie, they should earn a free drink or popcorn or whatever, so they could go home, redeem their points for a free snack bar item (any snack bar item - it sucks when you're required to get one item you don't want) which could be mailed to them (expensive) or, at the register the next time through, they could just subtract points from their card for a free item. Alternatively, they could save the points for free movie tickets (unrestricted - I hate the AMC "free" tickets) or you could have even bigger prizes on the website - give away movie posters, lobby paraphanalia (how cool would it be to have one of those 20 foot high posters you see?) or even larger prizes - trips to film sets, whatever.
That's about the bulk of my idea, but I'll expound on the trivia presentation as well. All you'd need is a customized NTN installation that would read usernames from the card that stores your points and you'd just have it entered into your gamepad on the armrest. You wouldn't be able to register, check news stories, or do any of the other extraneous things offered on the NTN "playmaker." You'd enter the card and you'd be ready to go - or, perhaps, in the case of families, you'd enter the card, choose the username you want to play as (up to six names per card, or something like that) and then you could remove the card and enter it into another armrest. The card would have to be in an armrest to register points (any armrest will do in the case of families) and then, before the movie starts, along with the "Turn Off Your Cellphones" reminder, you could remind people to remove their frequent moviegoer cards. Each game would be confined to one theater during most of the showings, as you'd have to synchronize the games across theaters to have rankings, plus, you don't want too many people playing as a leaderboard with 100 people would discourage those at the bottom of the list from paying attention. During the slower times of the day though, you could combine theater rankings to get people who like competition involved as they wouldn't want to play alone. Each round would consist of 10 to 15 questions (a standard NTN Wipeout game includes 15 questions in 15 minutes, but that includes commercials). So you get 15 questions in 10 minutes (or perhaps even 15 minutes if you wanted to run commercials alongside the in-game commercials to give people one break during the game for food or the bathroom. If you decided to change seats, you could take your score with you via the moviegoer card, or, if you just removed the card but then didn't re-insert it somewhere else, the armrest would stay logged in, as any "sign off" buttons would be confusing - you'd just need arrows (which would double as answer keys and an Enter key. So you could have 2 rows of three (standard NTN layout) with the Up arrow on the top row (#2) and the down arrow on the second row (#5). You could then use the #6 key as the ENTER key as NTN games only have five possible answers.
As I was writing the above in-depth trivia post, another thought occurred to me. To have even more fun, you could have a short trivia game after the movie about the movie itself. You could minimize the credits (not sure if the MPAA would allow that though) and have part of the screen used for a trivia game that would be something like 5-7 questions in increasing difficulty. You've already got a captive audience, you could give them some parting ads (as you forget most of the ads you saw before the movie) and give them a chance to earn more points, or, if you could make the trivia questions hard enough, give away prizes right then and there to the top scorer if enough people play (or during the "primetime" shows on Friday and Saturday nights that are full price). So if you had a packed house on a Friday night and got a minimum of 30 people playing the final game for a movie, you could give away a T-shirt on the spot to the highest scorer that the studio would love to furnish.
God, how I'd love to open my own theatre(s) - I mean, I already own a great domain name - TheCineplex.com.

Not sure it really gets any better than this. Alice Cooper on rock star activisim:
WINNIPEG — In the eyes of Alice Cooper, all the rock stars campaigning for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry are guilty of one thing: treason. The shock-rock legend, a staunch Republican who attends NBA games in Phoenix with Arizona Senator John McCain, was disgusted when he learned of plans by Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, R.E.M. and other bands to hold a series of concerts aimed at unseating U.S. President George W. Bush.URL: Alice slams anti-Bush rockers
“To me, that’s treason. I call it treason against rock ‘n’ roll because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics,” says the 56-year-old Cooper, who begins a 15-city Canadian tour on Aug. 20 in Thunder Bay, Ont.
“When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I’d run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick.
”If you’re listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you’re a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we’re morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."
