Ducks & Angels. What more could you want?

2006/11/01

There's many good things about a RAID 5 array - it seamlessly integrates drives together as a larger one, provides redundancy should a drive fail, and, more or less, works flawlessly. My array was working perfectly for over a month when...two drives failed. I probably should have known that one of them wasn't good. Then when the second one failed, all hell broke loose.

I quickly drove to Fry's to replace the one drive I knew was bad, but when trying to rebuild the array, nothing could be done. The second drive quickly showed its shortcomings. Luckily the second drive wasn't completely lost, so I was able to salvage some data and move it over to a new 750 gig drive I bought, but in the end, quite a bit of data was lost. Unfortunately, I discovered this problem today as I was copying over files from my old server. And by copying, I mean moving, and not keeping a backup.

So I need to buy another 300 gig drive (luckily they're on sale at Fry's) and we'll see what the true damage is - I lost some pictures, but I know I have them backed up on CD or DVD somewhere and I lost some of my ripped TV shows, but I own them all on DVD, so no loss there. Just not sure what I want to do now.

The computer I am using as a server was my old computer. It was rock solid and performed like a champ. The new computer I built has been giving me nothing but headaches. I will never build another Intel-based computer again. With all the parts between the two computers, I have two options - salvage my old computer and make it my main computer and use my new computer as the server or perform another slight upgrade and buy a new motherboard and AMD chip. The ASUS CROSSHAIR motherboard has been getting outstanding reviews and AM2 chips aren't expensive. However, putting out another $500 or so for even more parts is a little ridiculous. And having this Intel chip running as a server is overkill. I doubt I could eBay it, but might give it a shot...I'm just really pissed off right now because my new computer isn't performing up to par and I lost a bit of data tonight. You'd think that with 18 or so hard drives running right now I wouldn't have data-integrity issues.
