Today, I called in sick to work (*cough*). In my five plus months of working there, I've called in sick twice now. Today, though, when I called in, instead of the, "get well soon" etc. that I expected (as I got the first time I called in), I got, "you should have called in earlier." Now, I guess that may be true, but if you're recovering from a cold, the best thing you can do is sleep. So if I'm sleeping, I guess I'm supposed to wake myself up to call in (you can't leave a message if you know you'll be sick the night before, etc.) and then try and go back to sleep. Perhaps if we had some sort of policy in writing, I would have done that, however, since I've been there and many people just decide not to call in at all, I figure calling in 30 minutes after we opened wasn't all too bad. Especially since I'm there early EVERY day, so if I don't show up, they should have already known I probably wouldn't be there (not like that's their job to figure out). But still...if I'm not there at 8:25 (before I'm supposed to be there - as I was every other day the past five months), figure it out.
And not that I should compare my attendance record to those of others, but I've been there for five months. In that time, I would guess that 75% of the other people working there have taken at least three to four times as many "sick" days as me. And, on those days, I would guess that 30% of the time, those people don't even bother calling in. Bascially, if you look at my attendance record vs. anyone else there, I think there may be only one or two other people with better records. And while that doesn't excuse my sick day or my calling in half an hour late, it should be worth something more than, "you should have called in earlier."
Thanks for letting me vent.
