Ducks & Angels. What more could you want?

2004/04/30

With one week down, it's kind of odd being a working person now. I got paid today, and after taxes, medicare and the like, I was left with less than I expected and it seems like I could have earned the same amount elsewhere (UCSD) while working less hours doing much less. But then again, driving buses can only take you so many places (well...actually it can take you a lot of places, but there's no room for advancement). At least working in a normal job, 40 hours a week, there's room for advancement. There's places to go. Or so I am hoping.

After last week's training in Long Beach, it was nice to not have to get up at the butt crack of dawn to sit on the 91 for an hour to get to work as I can just take side streets to Branch 15 and it takes under a 1/2 hour (there is a closer branch, but for some reason, I didn't get put there even though they had open spots for tellers). But anyways, I like the job, to a point. As long as there are customers to help, transactions to process, cash to work with, time goes by pretty quickly. And, at times, it can be pretty fast-paced, especially on days like today - end of the month, end of the week, end of the pay period - busy, busy, busy. And despite working extra long, it didn't seem like a day that was much longer than the rest. But when you're at the end of the line and there's 2-3 tellers in front of you, closer to the only door that people can enter through, you don't see much action, and a short period of time can seem much longer than it really is. But the people there are great - they're all really friendly, and, even though the names are a bit hard to master (lots of them begin with "M"), I know everyone and it's almost like a big family. I really like the work environment and I'm just glad I didn't end up in a job that I hate - the one that I've tried to avoid all my life - the job in a cubicle, with little social interaction. Just sitting there working on spreadsheets or something, no internet access, no music, no fun.

It's been a fun week, I've learned a lot, and if you have a paycheck that you need split between your checking account, savings account and a cashier's check, I can most certainly accommodate you.
