Ducks & Angels. What more could you want?

2003/10/07

As of 8:07pm this October 7, 2003, most news agencies are reporting that Governor Davis has been recalled and Arnold Schwarzenegger has been elected the new governor of California. As a California resident, I'm glad this has happened. While I don't think it's necessary to debate the reasons Davis should have been recalled, what has he done for us as governor? I really didn't much care who won the recall. I just wanted it to pass. Of course, seeing Schwarzenegger or McClintock in office would have been much more preferable than Bustamante, it didn't matter. Davis has zero charisma, has absolutely done nothing for this state, and in many areas, run the state into the ground. Granted, the deficit is not his fault (though a stupid article I read in our college newspaper - the UCSD Guardian - compared the CA deficit to that of the Federal government - apples and oranges...), but still, entering long term contracts for energy, leading to the highest prices in the nation, not working hard enough to reform worker's compensation laws, etc., etc. have made him a prime candidate to be recalled.

While I am quite sure that this law will be changed, I find it absolutely stupid that people would criticize the recall as a right-wing attempt to overturn a legitimate election in November, 2002. Even though it was funded by Issa, a republican, it was not this vast right-wing conspiracy many have made it out to be. If the people of California didn't want the recall (even though only a small number of voters needed to get the recall on the ballot), the recall would not have passed tonight. If the people of California were happy with the way the State's government was being run, the recall would not have passed. But Californias were upset with our leadership, upset with the impasse created in Sacramento, and the recall passed and soon Arnold will be our governor.
